Why Your Lasting Impression Is More Important Than Your First (And Why It's Better To Meet IRL)

When meeting a new person, it’s natural to want to make a good impression. But when it comes to dating, suddenly that pressure is SO much more intense. You desperately want to start on the right foot, but nerves can have you putting that foot in your mouth instead.

At The Inner Circle, we know dating is hard (we literally exist to make it easier). And we’ve got some good news for you, it turns out your first impression doesn’t matter all that much.

It’s your last impression that makes all the difference.

The “Peak-End Rule” is based on a study that links impressions with the memories they form, and the conclusion it makes is that your first impression isn’t all that memorable. Instead, your brain stores two parts of an experience; the “peak” (so an overall highlight, like a particular good joke or the first time you truly connected), and the “End” (so the last impression you make when leaving).

This is great news for date goers. The very start of a date is when you’re at your most nervous and the least likely to let someone see what you’re actually like. You can relax in the knowledge that your date will take away memories of you at your best.

There is a catch though…

The same study showed people remember bad experiences more than they remember good ones. So you can’t disregard your first impression entirely, you’ve just got to make sure you don’t offend them or do something unforgettably awful.

The challenge instead is to make sure you leave them on a high and hopefully wanting more...

All of this has to be done in person, which is why The Inner Circle exists. We’re the dating app that’s about getting you off of dating apps, and on actual dates instead.

Sparks happen in real life, so register for The Inner Circle here and put your new found knowledge into practice.
